Seattle Interior Painting Cost Guide
Priced 2026-09-25 from Kolmo's estimator · Greater Seattle · Planning figures, not quotes
Interior painting in Seattle runs $1.01 – $2.02 per square foot for standard wall painting, and $1.78 – $3.56 per square foot for walls, trim, and ceilings together. Cabinet refinishing is priced per piece rather than per square foot, at $130 – $180 per door or drawer face.
Those are planning ranges for budgeting a typical Seattle job with standard prep and two coats of quality acrylic latex. A walkthrough is what turns a range into a quote.
Cost per square foot
- Standard Wall Painting: $1.01 – $2.02 per sq. ft.
- Walls + Trim + Ceilings: $1.78 – $3.56 per sq. ft.
- Cabinet Refinishing: $130 – $180 per door/drawer face
Square footage here means wall area, not floor area — roughly the room's perimeter multiplied by ceiling height. A 10' x 12' bedroom with 8' ceilings has about 352 square feet of wall, not 120.
Cost by room size
Typical ranges for common Seattle room sizes, assuming standard prep and two coats:
-
Powder Room (approx. 5' x 6')
- Walls Only: $380 – $426
- Walls + Trim + Ceiling: $402 – $638
-
Bedroom / Office (approx. 10' x 12')
- Walls Only: $402 – $710
- Walls + Trim + Ceiling: $628 – $1,063
-
Large Living Room (approx. 16' x 20')
- Walls Only: $598 – $1,015
- Walls + Trim + Ceiling: $1,101 – $1,857
-
Open Concept Main Floor (800+ sq. ft.)
- Walls Only: $920 – $1,531
- Walls + Trim + Ceiling: $1,928 – $3,248
What moves your quote
Occupied vs. empty. Painting around furniture, and in a home someone is living in, adds labor compared to an empty rental or new build. Moving, covering, and re-setting a furnished room is real time, and it is the most common reason two quotes on the same square footage differ.
Prep and wall condition. Patching, skim coating, caulking, and priming are where the hours go. Smooth, sound walls sit at the low end of every range above. Heavy patching, texture repair, or covering a dark color with a light one pushes toward the high end.
Trim and ceilings. Cutting in trim, doors, and ceilings roughly doubles the per-square- foot number, which is why the walls-only and walls-plus-trim ranges are so far apart. It is the single biggest scope decision on most interior jobs.
Lead paint. Homes built before 1978 — common in Queen Anne, Wallingford, Ballard, and much of north Seattle — require EPA-certified lead-safe work practices when disturbing painted surfaces. That is a legal requirement, not an upsell, and it affects both method and budget.
Moisture and ventilation. Seattle interiors stay damp much of the year. Proper ventilation and appropriate products keep curing times predictable, particularly in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements.
The difference between a $1.80 quote and a $3.50 quote
On the same room, the gap is almost always prep, coats, and cut-in quality rather than paint brand. A low bid usually assumes sound walls, minimal patching, one coat over a similar color, and no trim. A high bid usually includes full prep, two coats, trim, and protection of a furnished space.
Neither is wrong. They are different scopes, and the useful question when comparing two quotes is which prep and how many coats each one includes.
Sources and pricing date. Interior painting figures were priced 2026-09-25 from Kolmo's interior-painting estimator for one furnished room of each size with 8 ft ceilings (the open main floor as 25' x 32'), premium interior paint in eggshell, two coats. The low end of each range is walls in good condition with a smooth finish and no primer; the high end is walls in poor condition with heavy texture, a primer coat and a dark-to-light color change, with complex trim where trim is painted. Per-square-foot figures divide those totals by the wall area (perimeter × ceiling height) of the bedroom, living room and open main floor; a powder room walls-only job prices at the estimator's $380 job minimum, so its per-foot figure runs higher. Cabinet refinishing is Kolmo's published per-face rate, not an estimator output. How the estimator is built: kolmo.io/how-estimates-work. Planning figures, not quotes.
